McKay Commission report – comment from Paul Tyler

Commenting on the Report of the Commission on the Consequences of Devolution for the House of Commons, Liberal Democrat Constitutional Affairs Spokesman, Lord Tyler said:

“The report has recognised the inherent difficulties in the throwaway line ‘there should be English votes for English laws’.

“The Government must now examine ways to give English MPs a distinct voice, but democracy demands more devolution to the major cities and counties beyond London.

“Responsibility for services could, for example, be devolved to unitary authorities (like Cornwall) tomorrow. Incessant debates about who votes on what in London should not be allowed to delay that process.”
