Government Complacency over Russian Referendum Interference

Cabinet Office Minister Lord Young has implicitly accepted Lord Tyler’s accusation that the “piecemeal approach” to investigating Russian involvement in the 2016 EU Referendum was “ potentially quite dangerous” (Tuesday 19 June).

Lord Tyler, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Constitutional and Political Reform, had referred to “the considered judgement of the Chairman of the DCMS Select Committee” on the veracity of the leaders of the Leave.EU, and their admission of Russian collusion in the campaign.  He urged the Government to bring together a combined, comprehensive investigation.  He pointed out that the outcome of the referendum – and indeed of the whole Brexit process – was called in question by the lack of conclusive assessment.

In further exchanges Lord Young observed that the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, the Information Commissioner, the Electoral Commission, the Select Committee and the Intelligence & Security Committee were all examining different aspects of the issues which Lord Tyler had raised, and acknowledged the need for coordination.
