After a long campaign by local MP Paul Tyler, supported by Liberal Democrat councillors, Network Rail has agreed to review safety precautions at level crossings on the Newquay branch line.
In a letter to Mr. Tyler, Regional Director John Curley, acknowledges that a review is necessary.
"The provision of the barriers to which you refer is one of the options being given due consideration and I can confirm that it is Network Rail’s intention to provide these in the current financial year at one of the busiest crossings on the branch as far as road traffic is concerned, Quintrell Downs. It must be recognised that this barrier conversion will cost £1m and therefore any conversions must be considered in the wider context of Network Safety."
"I am delighted that Network Rail is now more responsive to local concerns", said Paul Tyler today (Monday). "After a succession of accidents, some of them quite serious, and far too many years of dither and delay, this is real progress. I am also assured that the other crossings will be re-examined to see what safety improvements can be made. I have arranged with the operations and safety division of Network Rail to inspect all the relevant crossings in the next few weeks,"
