PUBLIC SERVICES SHOULD NOT LURK IN CLOAKS OF SECRECY

Responding to news that the Scottish Executive is considering widening the scope of the Freedom of Information Act north of the border, Liberal Democrat Constitutional Affairs spokesman, Lord Tyler, said:

"I called for a UK wide expansion of the law earlier this month.

"The Scottish Freedom of Information Act is already stronger than that in England.  And now it appears the Scots could gain more transparency still.

"It would be quite wrong to leave English public authorities in translucent limbo, with parts of the country's vital public services continuing to lurk in cloaks of secrecy."

Notes to Editors: Lord Tyler called a special House of Lords debate on Freedom of Information on 19th June; the transcript is available at: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld200708/ldhansrd/text/80619-0012.htm#08061969000003
