The pressure is growing in the longstanding campaign, led in Parliament by Paul Tyler and Margaret Mar, to establish the true extent, nature and consequences of toxic contamination in aircraft.
Since 2000 more than 200 seperate investigations have been carried out by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) into cases of contaminated air entering UK aircraft. The true extent is likely to be higher, as questions in Parliament have uncovered discrepancies in the reporting process. Whilst the Government must now urgently address the issues surrounding pilot and air crew safety, many questions remain to be answered - not least regarding the health of passengers. A University College London (UCL) report due for publication estimates that as many as 197,000 passengers could have been exposed to contaminated air in just one year.
Paul Tyler's latest questions to Parliament:
The Lord Tyler—To ask Her Majesty’s Government what percentage of mandatory occurrence reports submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority relating to contaminated air are investigated by the Air Accident Investigation Branch. [DfT] (HL4092)
