LORDS VOTE: POLITICAL SOMERSAULTS

A group of Labour and Conservative MPs who had previously signed a motion supporting the democratic principle that a revised House of Lords should be wholly or substantially elected, went on to vote for a wholly appointed Second Chamber in Tuesday night’s vote.

The MPs, listed below, performed a spectacular political somersault, supporting the discredited and anti democratic system of patronage, encouraged by the Prime Minister and the Lord Chancellor. This option was soundly defeated.

Paul Tyler, Liberal Democrat Shadow Leader of the House said “Obviously they were more concerned to keep on the right side of Tony Blair than to secure democratic reform of the House of Lords. Perhaps they were looking forward to ennoblement.

“Just as peculiar was the behaviour of four conservative MPs. Archie Norman, James Cran, Derek Conway and Geoffrey Clifton-Brown voted for 100% and 60% elected Members of the reformed House, but against 80% - thus defeating there own party policy.

“It is a sad reflection on those Members that they saw fit to abandon their principles at the eleventh hour.”
