FISH AND SHIPS APPEAL
MPs from coastal constituencies all over the country – including Paul Tyler in North Cornwall - are backing a special appeal to help rebuild the Sri Lankan fishing fleet, devastated by the Tsunami catastrophe.
Already, local fishermen in Devon have raised over £7000, enough to fund to traditional fishing catamarans, but nearly 30,000 registered fishing boats in Sri Lanka have been reported as destroyed, damaged or lost in the Tsunami. The plan is for every coastal constituency in Britain with tourist or fishing interests to raise funds to replace the lost fishing boats.
“We want to raise sufficient money to launch 1,000 ships,” said Paul Tyler today (Tuesday). “This appeal already has the backing of the Prime Minister and the Leaders of the Opposition Parties, and is being actively supported by MPs from other parts of Cornwall and Devon. It was started by a British businessman, with interests all over Sri Lanka who was swimming in the sea at the time of Tsunami, and hauled to safety by a local fisherman. I am sure that all those who know the dangers and challenges of fishing will have a particular personal interest to support this appeal, and anyone who has spent a holiday in that area will also want to help.”
All UK donations are being collected by Children in Crisis (Registered Charity Number 1020488) and then relayed to the “Fish and Ships” project in Sri Lanka.
