FREEDOM OF INFORMATION “SHAM”
A full year after the Freedom of Information Act the membership of the “Freedom of Information Users Group” is still secret….for the simple reason that it has not been set up yet.
In answer to oral questions in the Lords today (Tuesday) from Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Tyler, Baroness Ashton of Upholland admitted this delay, but sought to defend the huge backlog of examination of official secrecy complaints.
Lord Tyler said that those who had campaigned long and hard for this legislation were “disappointed and disillusioned” by the long delays in the processing of complaints and “the failure to deliver”.

NEW HOPE FOR POISON VICTIMS ?

Campaigners at Downing Street in 2002
“The scandalous cover-up of Britain’s worst ever water poisoning incident is gradually unravelling” said former North Cornwall MP Paul Tyler, now Lord Tyler, today (Thursday).
“The publication of the Coroner’s statement this afternoon provides a direct and explicit link between the 1988 contamination of water supplies in North Cornwall and the onset of a form of Alzheimer’s Disease. Previous scientific evidence of the probable connection between this aluminium poisoning and Alzheimer’s was never tested in Court, because the group action for damages was withdrawn in 1994 and derisory compensation payments made instead.”

Government use of ‘Premium Rate’ phone lines
TYLER LAMENTS INADEQUATE RESPONSE
Lord Tyler today (Thursday) expressed his frustration at the continued use by Government Departments of ‘Premium Rate’ phone lines, charging citizens over-the-odds for calling their offices.
Following a series of recent answers to the Cornish Peer, it is abundantly clear that the Government’s action on this issue has been sorely inadequate. “The responses I have had so far are a real mixed bag, which demonstrate a total lack of a coordinated response”.
The DVLA states that it is “awaiting the outcome of the current OFCOM consultation and will comply with any changes made to the regulation”, whilst the at the Foreign Office “The 0870 number will continue to run in conjunction with the 0845 number for one year until it is discontinued.”

GOVERNMENT U-TURN ON AIRCRAFT SAFETY
“Air crews and passengers will be relieved that Ministers are – at last – taking sufficiently seriously long-standing concerns about dangerous air contamination risks in aircraft cabins”, said Lord (Paul) Tyler today (Tuesday).
As an MP Paul Tyler led the Parliamentary campaign to draw attention to these risks, with a series of Commons debates and questions, and gave the keynote speech at the International Aero Conference on Contaminated Bleed Air at Imperial College on 20th April 2005.
