LORDS REFORM: 'LISTEN TO THE PUBLIC' - TYLER

Liberal Democrat Peer, Lord (Paul) Tyler this afternoon (Wednesday) challenged opponents of Lords Reform to listen to public opinion.

Speaking in the House of Lords following a statement on Lords Reform from the Lord Chancellor, Lord Tyler said, “Is it not important to obtain and retain public consent for the institutions of parliamentary democracy?”

Pointing out that a substantial opinion poll by the Hansard Society, published on Monday, showed that 82% were in favour of a majority elected component in the reformed House, with only a six percent in favour a fully appointed chamber, he urged the Government to recognise the people’s right to be heard.

COMPULSORY VOTING CALL 'ADMISSION OF FAILURE' - TYLER

Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Minister, Lord Tyler today (Thursday) said Peter Hain's call for compulsory voting was an admission of Labour's failure to re-engage citizens and empower local government.

Commenting, Lord Tyler said:

"I welcome Peter Hain's repeated calls for a democratic second chamber, and for reform of the voting system.

"Yet his call to make voting compulsory is misguided.  At the moment, in many safe seats, forced voting would result in people writing in 'None Of The Above'.

“MAKE IT AN ISSUE” A WELCOME DEVELOPMENT FOR DEMOCRACY – TYLER

Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Minister, Lord Tyler, today (Monday) welcomed a new initiative launched by the Labour Peer, Helena Kennedy, to give people a say in the reform of the British constitution.

Commenting Lord Tyler said:

“This is an excellent development of the cross-party Taking Power initiative, which I convened online in the autumn at http://www.takingpower.org.

“We asked people to comment on the whole range of recommendations made by Helena Kennedy’s POWER Inquiry, which comprehensively revealed failings of our democratic system.  This analysis endorsed the Liberal Democrat approach but has also stimulated our “Better Governance” policy development.

MATTHEW TAYLOR MP

Lord (Paul) Tyler today (Thursday) said Matthew Taylor would be missed by his constituents, by Parliament and by Cornwall as a whole.

Commenting on Mr Taylor’s decision to stand down at the next general election, Lord Tyler said:

“If the next Election takes place when we expect, Matthew will have given unstinting service to Cornwall for over 22 years.

“Huge improvements have been achieved, and a huge numbers of his constituents have been helped, during that period.  I am sure everyone in Cornwall, of all parties, will want to thank him for that.
