CORNISH HOME RULE?
"PROOF IN THE PUDDING"
Liberal Democrat Peer, Lord (Paul) Tyler this week took Ministers to task over their intentions for local government in Cornwall.
Exchanges in the House of Lords saw the Government reaffirm its commitment to devolving powers – on a whole range of issues, including transport – to “sub-regions”. Speaking in the Chamber, Lord Tyler slammed Conservative economic regions, like the South West, as “artificial creations” and said that areas such as Cornwall and Northumberland clearly had a “distinct, historic and geographical identity” and are “clearly sub-regions in that sense”.
He challenged the Government further to give power to new local authorities so that they could pilot a local income tax to replace what he called the “failed Conservative council tax model”.
This morning, Lord Tyler met with all five of Cornwall’s MPs to discuss the Minister’s response. The six agreed that Ministers were still ‘making the right noises’ about devolution to Cornwall and said they would keep the pressure on as the process continues. |

"CASH FOR SILENCE"
SCANDAL ON TOXIC FUMES
Liberal Democrat Peer, Lord (Paul) Tyler today (Thursday) revealed a secret agreement between British Aerospace and two Australian airlines. Signed in 1993, the deal saw BAe pay East West Airlines and Ansett Transport Industries some AUS$750,000 to silence the airlines about what it terms “the cabin environment problem”.
Lord Tyler has pursued this issue, with respect to BAe 146 aircraft, for seven years but British Aerospace and Government Ministers have always denied there was a problem. Most recently, in a 2006 written answer to him, Ministers said they were unaware of the secret agreement referred to in the Lords today. |

TYLER LEADS LIB DEMS TO RADICAL REFORM PROPOSALS
Liberal Democrat Constitutional Affairs Spokesman, Lord (Paul) Tyler has led his Party in accepting a radical package of proposals for reforming Britain's political system.
In a speech to the Party's Brighton Conference, Lord Tyler said Liberal Democrats would seek to "put our outdated poltical process on a real jury trial" by establishing a Convention, half of whose members would be drawn by lot from the public, to draft a new Constitution for the United Kingdom
The policy paper also proposes immediate reform of Britain's electoral system, which Lord Tyler told delegates was responsible for "polarising our politics" and "alienating voters". The Liberal Democrats' political opponents, he said, could not be taken seriously until they understood the impotance of reforming the electoral system. |

DIAL 999……FOR DELAY?
If they were in any doubt before, readers can be under no illusion now about the extent to which our emergency services are currently short-changed. In successive days last week these pages highlighted the problems they face: on Wednesday “FIRE CUTS PUT ON HOLD”, on Thursday “RURAL 999 COVER ‘THREAT TO LIVES’” and on Friday, under the headline “THE REAL COST OF THE POLICE”, the revelation that they are “undermanned and strangled by bureaucracy”.
The Penhallow Hotel tragedy has, of course, given new urgency to these issues, but they are not themselves new.
We need all the support we can get for the long campaign some of us have fought to seek central government recognition of the special and peculiar problems that are posed for all our emergency services by the huge increase in population – and traffic – in the holiday season. Cornish MPs of all parties have argued for years that all four services (Fire, Ambulance, Police and Coastguards) have been under-funded by successive governments. |
