"Save our Pension Books"

Over the next two years the Government will be writing to all pensioners offering them three different ways of receiving their pension, all of which have potential problems that have not been explained or addressed, but keeping their pension book will not be an option.

The Liberal Democrats are calling on the Government to;

  • Offer pensioners the freedom to choose. Many pensioners are happy with their familiar Pension Books and should have the right to continue using them.

  • Send clear information to pensioners informing them about the new options that are available.

  • Simplify the application process for the new Post Office Card Account.

  • Ensure that measures are in place to enable pensioners who forget their PIN numbers to access their money and that pensioners who fall ill, or who rely on a number of carers to pick up their money are still able to get someone they trust to pick up their pension.

At the moment nearly half a million pensioners receive their money with a pension book in the South West. Paul Tyler and the local Liberal Democrats are urging all pensioners who wish to retain the right to draw their pension at their local Post Office to insist on keeping this traditional method of payment.

Say NO to "Top Up" and Tuition Fees

The Liberal Democrats stand by their commitment to abolish tuition fees and will continue to oppose top up fees. The costs of this will be met through a fair and progressive taxation system. Increasing admissions in Scottish Universities after the abolition of tuition fees shows the resounding success of Liberal Democrat policy.

We support the partial restoration of grants and the introduction of HEEMA's for students studying locally.

Education must be re-engineered - to meet the needs of students in the 21st century, and to provide a wider range of qualifications based on a system of credit accumulation.

THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT PLEDGE

The Liberal Democrats are now the only UK wide Party to pledge to students and their parents - your access to university will be guaranteed on merit not your ability to pay.

General Election - June 2001

"In a General Election that had an historically low turnout North Cornwall has again proved to be the exception - polling almost five percent higher than the national average. Thank you to everyone in North Cornwall for your continued support, I will continue to campaign on those issues that matter most to the people of North Cornwall, whatever their party allegiance!"

The General Election on June 7th 2001 saw Paul Tyler returned as the Member of Parliament for North Cornwall for the third consecutive time. The result was announced at around 4.40am on the morning of June 8th - and despite a determined challenge from the Conservative leader of Restormel Borough, John Weller, Paul retained more than 51% of the vote in North Cornwall. The share of the Liberal Democrat vote in Newquay, home town of the Conservative candidate, was particularly high - reflected further in the County Council results which returned Lib Dem candidates to two of the three County seats for Newquay.

CARE FREE or CARE LESS?

Cornish Elderly Crisis Deepens

From July 1st (as you probably saw in the national press) elderly people in Scotland were guaranteed FREE personal care – help with bathing, dressing, feeding and so on.

This was a direct result of the demands of the Liberal Democrats in agreeing to take part in the Scottish Administration. Our colleagues in Wales, who are also in the Administration there, are working for a similar scheme.

Sadly, here in Cornwall the trend is in the opposite direction. Care homes are closing for lack of adequate funding. Individual residents (or their families) are being denied full personal care without paying extra. Hospital beds are "blocked" by delays in finding suitable care homes for elderly patients.

The nonsense of personal care charges is made worse by the differences between the NHS and residential homes. In hospital, the state pays the full cost of looking after those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease; the same patient in a home has to pay for personal care.

We Liberal Democrats are mounting a big Campaign this year to draw attention to these problems, these injustices and the human misery that can result. At a time of life when people should be treated with respect, and their dignity appreciated, this unjust situation must be exposed.

I have already obtained a great deal of useful information from care home proprietors and managers. This is being collated by our Shadow Minister, Paul Burstow MP, and we Liberal Democrat MPs will be presenting a dossier to the Government.

Now we need YOUR help. Can you give me any more examples to quote?

I know that you will agree that this important. I hope that you will help make the Campaign a success.….for the sake of vulnerable elderly people who deserve a better deal.

(PAUL TYLER MP)

Health Survey

Responding to the concerns of local residents North Cornwall MP Paul Tyler is undertaking an extensive survey of opinions about the health services available in North Cornwall. Responding to the concerns of local residents North Cornwall MP Paul Tyler is undertaking an extensive survey of opinions about the health services available in North Cornwall.

"Our Inquiry is very comprehensive. We want to know precisely which parts of the NHS are performing least well, and which services are failing. We want to get a clear picture so that I can report back to the Health Authority and to the Secretary of State."

Liberal Democrat plans for recruiting more medical staff and cutting out wasteful red tape are now well advanced, but we also want to hear from patients what their priorities are. For too long politicians have thought that they know best. Mr Tyler said "The last Government’s disastrous reorganisation of the NHS should have taught us never to trust them again."

The results of this survey will be posted on the web-site in due course.

Education Survey

Summer 2000 saw the Liberal Democrats conduct a survey of Cornish Headteachers.  The replies showed a serious cumulative cash shortfall - after several years of inadequate investment, and underlined widespread frustration with Government red tape.  Copies of the report can be obtained from Paul Tyler MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.  During the week of 16th to 20th October 2000 Paul Tyler visited Colleges and Schools in North Cornwall to follow up on the Survey.  He met Heads, staff, Governors and pupils, both to be briefed on recent developments and to discuss current problems.

This page will chart the progress of this campaign over time.

Asking hard-hitting questions in parliament
Paul has made a speciality of hounding the government on issues affecting his constituents which it tries to duck or evade responsibility for.

Campaigning for farmers and rural communities
Paul has been a key campaigner on the Organophosphate sheep dip issue (among the many other rural issues he has championed).
